Overview

Shannon May, and her partner Jay Kimmelman, came up with the idea for Bridge while teaching in rural China and witnessing the pervasive effects of low-quality schooling on poor children. In 2015, they were awarded The Economist’s Innovation Award for Social and Economic Innovation Award. Shannon oversees Bridge’s schools across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and India. She has a BA, Magna Cum Laude in Social Studies from Harvard and a PhD in Anthropology from UC Berkeley.

Bridge International Academies provide nursery and primary school education for 100,000 African children whose families live on less than USD 2 per person per day. It also hopes to expand into Asia. It seeks to deploy data-driven and technology- enabled teaching methods. Bridge also tries to forge partnerships with governments and other NGOs to solve core education challenges, from teacher accountability to children’s learning gains.
